Youth Classes
Class sizes at the Slavin Nadal School of Ballet are kept small in order to allow one-on-one attention that better serves the needs of the individual dancer.
Pointe Classes
Pointe work begins when the body as a whole is judged by the Directors to have achieved the necessary strength – usually at the Intermediate I level.
Pilates Class
Pilates
Optional Pilates training is offered once per week for levels Intermediate I through Advanced. This class emphasizes stretching and core strength building designed specifically for ballet dancers.
Ballet Etiquette
The following protocols, which are part of ballet training, are gradually introduced as appropriate to age group:
- Maintain correct posture and attitude throughout class.
- Pay attention to the instructor at all times.
- At the end of each exercise, remain in the final position without moving until the last note of the music has played.
- Turn toward the bar – not toward the center of the room – when changing directions between exercises at the barre.
- Remain standing unless you have permission from the instructor to sit.
- Assimilate the exercises quickly in order to get the most out of the class; fast assimilation is in itself a skill that must be developed and practiced.
- Pay close attention to corrections given to other individuals, and apply them to your own dancing.
- When another group of students is dancing, be attentive and ready to begin as they finish.
- After completing a forward-moving combination in the center, move directly to the side of the room before returning to the back to repeat the exercise. Do not walk through the dancers behind you.
- When you finish an exercise in the center, leave the floor as quickly as possible.
- At the end of each class, thank the instructor and curtsy/bow.
Parent Observation Week
Open Class Week is held at the end of the Fall Semester. Family and friends are invited to observe classes of any level.
Spring Concert
The school presents an annual Spring Concert in late May/early June. Students have the opportunity to use what they have learned during the year in a professional, theatrical setting. Since exposure to the stage is a very special experience, participation in the concert is encouraged but not mandatory.
